PHOTOGRAPH OF THE WEEK - 30 October 2006

Its our pleasure to bring you some of the finest weather photographs from around New Zealand. New Zealand's stunning scenery combined with beautiful cloud formations make it one of the best places in the world for cloud and weather photography.

The famous english landscape painter John Constable recognised the importance of the sky and the weather when he wrote to his friend John Fisher in 1821 'It will be difficult to name a class of Landscape in which the sky is not the "key note" the standard of "Scale" and the chief "Organ of Sentiment"... the sky is the source of light in nature - and governs everything' (ref BBC).

The success of the Photograph of the Week feature is totally dependent on your skills and the keeness of your eyes to spot what is often a fleeting vista. We have been truly amazed at the quality and variety of the photographs that have been submitted to MetVUW.

We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has submitted photographs and we look forward with great anticipation to receiving many many more.

Rob Bargh

Mount Taranaki from the Alpine Clup Hut on Mt Ruapehu. 'I took this from the Alpine Clup Hut Monday 9 October 2006 at sunset. The weather had been closed in all day and this was a brief break where we saw Taranaki then it was bad again' wrote Rob.

Anja Moebis

'I took a this photo of Ngauruhoe thee weeks ago on the Road from Whakapapa Village' wrote Anja.

Cecilia Thrift

'I love your website and check it every day for potential "interesting weather" - never happier than when there's weather coming my way.

I attach a photo that I took today (28 October 2006) on my annoying digital camera. I think it's lenticular clouds? But am probably wrong' wrote Cecilia.

You are not wrong Cecilia, these are lenticular clouds. These regularly form over the Tararuas in the strong north-westerly wind.

James McGregor, MetVUW

By chance James was in the Wairarapa and at the same time that Cecilia was taking her photograph from Wellington he was taking photographs of the same lenticular clouds but from the other side of the ranges at the A & P Show in Clareville near Carterton.

The cloud was absolutely stunning and stretched both southwest and northeast as far as the eye could see. The photograph above was taken towards the west and the one below was towards the northeast. A 12 mm wideangle lens was used on a Nikon D200 camera, but this did not do justice to the enormity of the cloud formation. This was clearly an instance where nothing but an all sky view camera would have sufficed.

James McGregor, MetVUW

Since publishing these waveclouds we received this fascinating email from Vaughan Ruddick 'James, I was lucky enough to be surfing my glider along those particular waves last Saturday. I am only sorry that I was not carrying my camera with me so that I could have taken an up close and personal view of these mighty clouds (next time).

I ran the wave from Turakirae Head off the south coast, up to the Napier/Taupo Rd and back to Paraparaumu, In the morning I ran a low level system between 8000ft-13,000ft as the leni's hadn't set up. But while I was mucking around northwest of Napier the main leni's started forming. I climbed up to the base of the leni's west of Waipukerau. Which was around 17,500ft and ran south along the edge back to the Wairarapa.

Bases of leni's 17,000ft tops 25-32,000ft, silky smooth and some amazing climb rates..

Great Photo's, Great Web site.'

Many many thanks for your email Vaughan what a fantasic journey.

Mike Nicholson

'At 16:50 Monday 23 October 2006, I noticed these clouds heading in an easterly direction. There were high winds at the time with some rain, no other tangible evidence of storm activity. Just seem to be part and parcel of the wonderful weather Auckland experienced over the Labour Weekend. My location at the time was some 20km north of Waiuku. Weekend weather was quite annoying, I only managed to see one Orionid meteor as I only got one 15 minute break in the cloud cover at 04:00 Tuesday morning' wrote Mike.

Robert Hopkins

'Good morning James, thank all those involved with the website, invaluable for us boaties! Love the pictures I hope you like the one attached. It was taken last December and it was a tremendous storm, it gave that impression as it came toward us from the south. You can see the Kaukau mast - just, which is one of the better lightning conductors around.

The photo was taken on a Canon A310, auto settings went to 1/320s, f3.6, 35mm equivalent.

Keep the good work up' wrote Robert.

Andrew Blackler

'Taken on 29 September 2006 at 15:07 looking WNW down Newton Road, Auckland. The cloud discharged several lightning forks about 5 minutes after this was taken; the rain margin was quite discrete, the tail of a twister can be seen although it did not form a funnel in the 10 minutes I watched it on the NW motorway' wrote Andrew.
