PHOTOGRAPH OF THE WEEK - 18 January 2007

Noel Munford

'Another image for you, this one on 17 January 2007 is a little different from the usual lower atmosphere phenomenon.

I managed to escape the encroaching cloud in the Manawatu by heading south to Levin and was rewarded with a spectacular sight. Comet McNaught dangling in the evening twilight sky - overlooking Lake Horowhenua. The image I have attached is very representative of the actual appearance of the comet to the naked eye, and the foreground gives a great idea of scale.

The comet was a very impressive sight and better then any naked eye comet that I have seen since 1965 when comet Ikeya-Seki graced our morning sky in November of that year. In the past week the comet has been so bright that it has been clearly visible in the day time sky close to the Sun' wrote Noel.

You were very lucky Noel, viewers in Wellington weren't as lucky as the sky was heavily overcast, (did see a glimpse of it on Tuesday evening though). James's daughter Stephanie also saw the comet in Levin, she called her father on the cellphone to tell him of the magnificent sight he was missing...... Well I am hopeful for tonight, the skies here are clear at the time of writing.

James McGregor, MetVUW

Spurred on by Noel's excellent photograph, James has been out every night looking for a good view of Comet McNaught and finally some success. This photograph was taken at Burnside in South Wairarapa at 22:14 on Friday 19 January 2007. A number of stars are also visible in this photograph. This was a 30 second exposure (hence the movement of the comet and stars) at f4 with a 70-210mm zoom lens set at 70mm on a Nikon D200 camera.

Richard Snell

'Gidday this photo was taken heading through the pig root towards Ranfurly on the 29 December 2006, it was an impressive storm to go through' wrote Richard.

Farid Yousef

Farid wrote 'I was doing my currency flight and flying about 2000' in between Shannon and Levin and saw this lil baby near the ranges. Hadn't been to NZ in the last 8 years and I really enjoyed every minute of it, especially the weather. Though it was raining most of the time I was here. Thought you might like to see this pix but unfortunately I caught it with my Nokia 6280 2 megapixel camera phone last year 4 August 2006. Hope you enjoy it!'

Kelly Cattermole

Kelly wrote 'On the family holiday we were going for a drive around Cape Foulwind just south of Westport when my mother spotted a funnel cloud in the sky ahead of us, here is a photo I took around 20 seconds later. The funnel cloud lasted for around 30 seconds once I started taking pictures. The cloud that brought in the funnel cloud continued inland very quickly bringing some very heavy rain, we followed the front but did not see any more funnel clouds form nor any hail or lightning. Photo taken at 15:45 on 27 December 2006 at Tauranga Bay, (Cape Foulwind, West Coast), with a Coolpix 4300, on automatic setting'.

David Butel

'I suppose you will have received dozens of photos of this rare site over Wellington, around 11:30 on 21 December 2006. The photo was taken through the windows at level 10 of our building so are not as good as it could be. After the photo was taken the blue part became greener. It was there for up to half an hour. We are pretty sure it wasn't Santa's sleigh' wrote David.

Maurice Weaver

This is a photo taken from a glider in a wave off Mt Cook at 9,500 ft. Wave is very useful for gliders to climb to heights from above 7,000 ft to 30,000 ft and above. Understanding the weather is essential for us and we use your site regularly to check the forecast, predict the day's weather and choose a task for the day' wrote Maurice.

John O'Malley

'Hi James, In August this year in amongst our family tapes I took a rather poor quality video of the sun setting from our house on Cashmere Hill in Christchurch - it is quite short and the focus is pretty rough as I had just quickly swung the camera around to film the sun as it dipped down behind the Torlesse Range. At the time I didn't notice anything unusual but over the Christmas break I finally got around to looking at the tape and was surprised to see a distinct green tinge to the lower edge of the setting sun that lasted about 29 frames (just over a second) just before the sun finally disappeared. I'm not an expert and will leave it to your more professional judgement but could this be an example of the elusive "green flash" sometimes observed in the setting sun that I have read about?

I have attached a selection of frame images to help you in your analysis! I have also sent a video file of the sunset in a separate email just in case your email server rejects it (it is 13MB in size)' wrote John.

Very interesting video John. In my opinion I believe it was the green flash that you observed. It is a phenomenon I had never seen myself until very recently. I was in the Lake Ferry Hotel in South Wairarapa on Thursday 28 December 2006 and was taking photographs of the setting sun through the window using a 70-200mm zoom lens on a Nikon D200. I wasn't expecting to see the green flash (having looked for it many times over the years and more or less given up on the hope of ever seeing it) and didn't have the camera set up on a tripod and I wasn't taking too much care about the focussing.

However much to my amazement I saw a distinct green flash, lasting a little less than a second, as the sun set behind the mountains of the South Island. Unfortunately I didn't get a particularly good photo of the phenomenon. These two photos shown below were taken either side of the flash which occurred on the upper right segment as it set behind the mountains. The upper left segment disappeared some moments later but there was no flash from this.

For more information on green flashes read here.
